YES! They are the some of the most willful fictional characters ever created! They truly believe that if they could just do enough of the right thing (ie. killing or trying to reform villains), then they could fill that gaping hole where their sense of safety and stability used to be. If they could just rid the world of evildoers and ne’er-do-wells, one way or another, no one would ever have to suffer like they did again. They won’t have to suffer again. It’s such an unrealistic pipe dream even for fiction, and especially for Gotham, but they go at it with such ferocity!! They will make the world safe, even if it’s the last thing they ever do!!
editing to add— that’s why their struggle against each other is so heated and everlasting!!!! they are fixing the world WRONG!!! they are doing The Thing that makes the other Unsafe and it cannot be permitted!!!!
